The principal beamhouse processes include soaking, liming/unhairing, fleshing, deliming, bating, and, where required, pickling. Since these operations largely determine the cleanliness, fibre opening, grain quality, and subsequent tanning behaviour of the pelt, it is widely recognised within the leather industry that "leather is made in the beamhouse.
